of Author Jalma Barrett

Jalma Barrett has written 14 books about wildlife for young readers. Now available, The DOVE FAMILY Tale—A True Story is based on careful and detailed observation of a pair of mourning doves raising two squabs on a third-story balcony outside her California home.

Author Barrett’s two series of books, Wildcats of North America and Wild Canines of North America, can be found in most schools and libraries, and are offered for sale on the internet. Six of these seven books are available in both English and Spanish.

A widely published wildlife journalist, Barrett has contributed to Ladies’ Home Journal, Cat Fancy, Dog World, Horse Illustrated, Petersen’s PhotoGraphic, Popular Photography, and others. Ms. Barrett also served as a contributing editor to Dog Fancy, including reviewing and critiquing books.

She was born and raised in New York City, attended Adelphi Academy and Edgewood Park Junior College. Her summers were spent on the shores of Connecticut and New Jersey, and she was home schooled by her mother on the sands of Miami’s South Beach in the winter. After raising her family (three boys and a girl) and working in a large advertising agency in New York City, she and her husband, animal photographer Larry Allan, moved to San Diego, where they lived for 25 years. The couple now resides in Sarasota, Florida.

Ms. Barrett actively supports the work of the Humane Society of the U.S., Preserve Our Wildlife Organization, Natural Resources Defense Council, Defenders of Wildlife, and the Wilderness Society.
